Around fifty automobiles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the case" and have asked to the public for information.
A senior political figure said the incident made him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine people by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
