Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
