A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
