The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together resides a intense examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
